Arthurs Pass
Arthur's Pass is a small village in the heart of the Southern Alps and situated between Canterbury and the West Coast of the South Island. It takes about two hours to drive from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass (170km) – and about one and a half hours from Greymouth. Popular activities include hiking in Arthurs Pass and skiing
Arthur's Pass National Park was New Zealand's third national park and established in 1929. It is a park of beautiful contrasts, dry beech forest in the east and verdant rainforest in the west. It has a historic highway and railway running through its centre. Hikers and climbers are drawn to Arthur's Pass for its high snow-capped mountains, picturesque valleys and ravines, steep gorges and braided rivers. The one-day hike to Avalanche Peak is a popular and extremely rewarding experience. more
Visitors should be prepared for all types of weather and bring 'layers' of clothing suitable for mountainous terrain. Typically the summer months (December to March) are mild - February can be hot, up to 35°C. Periods of stormy weather are common at any time of year.
Accommodation in Arthurs Pass is limited in Arthur's Pass village and the backpackers, lodges and cabins book up early in the peak season, December to April. Public shelters and camping grounds are available.
Take a moment to send a Canterbury related E-Postcard to your friends.
